Personality:
-Professionalism- Izzy is a professional pirate. He has been in this game for a very long time and knows the ins and outs and ropes of piracy. He tends to treat it more as if he's management in a career rather than a life of high adventure and swashbuckling. Among other things this means:
1) When handling crew, he doesn't generally go overboard with punishments and work and general violence. He does just enough to keep them on their toes and keep their respect but tries not to do anything egregious, because his main goal is to keep them loyal to their captain. He can can also be incredibly patient and affable to an extent when he has to be or with people he feels are peers or above him on the hierarchical ladder.
2) He has certain standards of other pirates he meets, and how they interact with him. He demands a certain respect because of who he is and who he works for and what he's accomplished. He himself will respect strength and competence, but has no room for weakness.
-Angry- Generally speaking, that's the thing people most people associate with Izzy. Even in canon he's referred to as an 'angry lil fecker'. His anger comes largely from two sources:
1) Being Management- Being Blackbeard's first mate means that he has to get the crew to do as they should. Piracy is a violent world and he has to be violent in it, especially so given he's shorter than average (for a man) and respect is hard earned. Most of his anger in show is just getting Bonnet's crew to do as they're told...
2) Frustration- He has worked tirelessly for Edward and Edward's reputation as Blackbeard and it's gotten increasingly difficult to do. Having to work twice as hard as everyone to get a modicum of respect, he nevertheless has done it. He's Ed's executive function, getting him up and going, placating the crew, helping establish Blackbeard as the force he is and feels like it's just all tossed aside because Ed is tired of being it. As if all he's done isn't worth anything. It's the kind of anger that festers.
-Arrogant- Izzy is a cocky motherfucker who knows his skills and his position and isn't afraid of a little swagger. There's few people he can't take down with his sword and being the right hand of the best pirate ever known also makes him feel better than everyone else. This can lead him into situations that he oversteps or bites off more than he can chew or is just surprised and humiliated by his opponent acting in ways he doesn't expect-- and not being the most imaginative can be easily flummoxed. This arrogance also leads him into thinking he can get respect just because as Captain without having any charisma to back it up, just bullying, but that doesn't work out
-Love/Loyalty- Izzy has a softer side that he desperately tries to cover up because A) it's dangerous B) he'll lose respect and C) real men don't act that way. But he works for Ed because he admires him a great deal, his strength, his vision- who he is- But also him as a person. He'll kill so Edward doesn't have to and tries to get Ed to focus so they don't die and can't leave him for long even though he resigns pretty much three times in various ways, he always comes back for Ed's sake and falls under his command. But that's only so long as Edward fits the mold of what Izzy's come to expect, ie Blackbeard. Izzy won't accept anything too soft for long because he can't even accept it in himself.
Weaknesses/Temptations:
He can be tempted by the promise of power- so that everyone will respect him no matter what and his enemies are punished-or anyone who dares speak against him.
He can be tempted by love- by the illusion that truly appreciates him and all that he does/can do. And doesn't expect him to be soft about it.
He can be tempted by spite- just to make someone suffer or piss them off
He can be tempted by pride- to prove he can indeed do something
He can be tempted by loyalty/compassion- ie doing whatever he needs to protect the ones he cares about
